Trek Valley of Flowers (5Ni/6Days): 14400 ft

(Difficulty: Moderate)

“Valley of Flowers” is one of the most sort after and oldest known treks in the Himalayas. This region comes under Valley of Flowers National Park and is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms one of the two core zones (the other being the Nanda Devi National Park) of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve.

It’s a valley in the Joshimath region about 8 to 10 kms long full of naturally curated flowers, and amazing foliage, we can say it’s the natural botanical garden of India. It’s not only the flowers that attracts but it has amazing mountain peaks on either side, and some are snow clad at some patches, it has vast green lands and a beautiful river flowing in the middle of the valley and the end of it is a glacier.

Moderate” level trek hence not an easy one, it has longer trail and ascent to Hemkund Sahib becomes steep and challenging that will test your level of fitness. One needs to train themselves well before attempting this trek.

Recommendations for the Trek

  1. Reach Rishikesh as early as possible and sleep well overnight.
  2. Start as early as possible, it is better if you start before sunrise, maybe 4 or 5 am any time later would only add on to your travel time and that will result less rest for the next day’s hike.
  3. Must stop for a while (5 to 10 m) to see the Panch Prayag or 5 river confluences.
  4. While moving on Rishikesh Badrinath highway most of the scenic views would be on the left and it only gets better after Karnprayag try not to nap until Govindghat as the mountains only grow taller and you might miss seeing some incredible cliffs in snow.
  5. Must start your fitness regime 45 Days to 60 Days prior to the trek, this will save your own wind while negotiating steep climb under depleting Oxygen levels. Your training must include long brisk walks in your trekking shoes, jogging or running 5 Kms within an hours’ time if you take time less than 45 m it’s the optimal fitness you would have achieved to negotiate this trek and most importantly stair climbing and the intensity of climbing stairs to peak up the frequency close to the travel date; watch out for tall towers around your place if the tower is 15 floored or above that shall be better. You must stop your training intensity about 5 to 7 days before your travel date to rest and recover from your injuries. Your training should be regular, a minimum of 05 to 06 days a week. And you must always keep in mind that the trek will not be an easy cake walk.
  6. Use trekking poles this will help conserve your energy while on a longer trail.
  7. As it is a Monsoon Trek so you need to be geared up for Rains, a poncho or a Rain Cape would be good, also waterproof cover for your Backpack, Umbrella would be a bad option as your hands needs to be free to use the Trekking Poles.
  8. Do remember if you are fit you only enjoy the trek. Good Luck & God Speed. The above quote is subject to revision w.r.t environmental changes & travel bookings & valid until midnight of 25th July 2023.
